Point Ellice House stands as a testament to the rich history of British Columbia. Situated on land once part of the sprawling estate of John Work, an Irish immigrant who rose to prominence as a Chief Factor of the Hudsons Bay Company (HBC) and later as one of the inaugural members of Vancouver Islands Legislative Council, the house carries the legacy of a bygone era.Point Ellice House serves as a focal point for understanding the Métis and mixed-race history of early British Columbia. It symbolizes the cultural intersections and exchanges that shaped the region, highlighting the significant contributions of First Nations and Métis communities to its development. Built in 1861, the Italianate Villa is one of the oldest homes in the city with extensive gardens. It boasts an extensive collection of Victorian and Edwardian artifacts from the OReilly family, who inhabited the house for 108 years.
